Skyfall (spoiler alert)
Okay if you guys didn't realise, one of my favourite move series of all time. I just adore James Bond, so I was really excited when this movie FINALLY came out and I would like to have an in-depth discussion about certain aspects of the film whilst reviewing it.
So first off, I think Daniel Craig could be my favourite Bond actor ever, not saying the other James Bond's are crap, I love every one of them (including George Lazenby, and not because I'm Australian). I just think Daniel Craig really brings a more gritty realistic potrayal to the role instead of the likes of Roger Moore, which you must agree, is on the verge of becoming Austin Powers. There is so many things about this film that I need to discuss, but unfortuntely all my friends aren't the greatest Bond fans, actually one of my friends thought there was only 4 movies (there's actually 23 :D). Anyway, so first I want to talk about how great this film was. Very well done, I'm actually quite a fan of Sam Mendes, having seen American Beauty, Road to Perdition and Revolutionary Road, which will probably have reviews out later in the future. The villan, Ravoul Silva, played by Javier Bardem, is probably now my favourite Bond villan (before it was Max Zorin, in A View To A Kill, played by Christopher Walken). I also love how they also incorporated all the stuff that made the old 007 movies legendary, such as Q and Moneypenny, along with M's old room with the lounge chair door (it totally looks like the fabric used for a lounge chair).Actually while we're on the topic of M, I seriously think 007 has now come full circle in a way, which is weird. It's like Judi Dench's M was the first M for 007 in Casino Royale and once she died the M from the old 007 movies was brought in... Well that's my understanding of it. Just that Q and Monneypenny and the old office is brought back once Mallory becomes M just seems to make that point. Which is also contradictory because she was in the Pierce Brosnan ones which were after the old 007 M, which means she's in the beginning and the end of 007 and... Oh god I give up... Anyway the film was great. Next point is that I love how they made Moneypenny more into the story then a 5 second talk with 007 in the office, and the fact that they also made her not madly in love with 007 like in the original ones... It creates even more realism... They really created goosebumps for me when they revealed both Mallory as M and Moneypenny... Anyway who's this Tanner bloke? He seems to have been in it since the Pierce Brosnan ones I believe? He just suddenly popped up and did half the work Moneypenny normally does.
One thing I do have to criticise is the fact that Ravoul Silva seemed to know EXACTLY what was going to happen months ahead of time, sort of in a Joker style from The Dark Knight. Getting arrested, knowing to blow a train to fall on Bond exactly in one spot etc... Just seems a bit crazy, that's all... But nonetheless still amazingly exciting and fun. People also get angry at the fact that he could have shot M in the fact at the courthouse, which I sort of agree with, but then I can see why not. He was so excited and giddy to taker the shot, he was probably trying to calm his nerves when Mallory pulled M over the side. I guess that sort of argues the point but still... Just take the damn shot Silva. Also a lot of people have argued that the film shouldn't have included the third act, with the Skyfall house and the final fight, and that it should have probably ended around the courthouse scene. I don't mind that scene personally, I mean after watching it half a dozen times it does get dull, but I like how it explores Bond and really attaches him to the past Bonds (Sean Connery mostly with Scotland) and how M died where the only other two people he loved died - his parents... I saw that as symbolic in a way, plus the whole house fight was pretty exhilirating... Unfortunately some of my friends saw it a couple of hours before me and rang me up and asked me to guess who died... So unfortunately I saw it coming in a way...
Also, another thing I wish to criticise is what the hell was that asian dude doing that got shot in the head by Patrice in Shanghai? All they show is him looking at some painting and then BLAM! dead and thats the end of it... Plus if everyone in that room was working on that hit, why couldn't the two big guys or Severine just shoot him? Why did they have to get Patrice to use a sniper across the town? Also Severine really was not in this film a lot, which was dissapointing, as she was in tons of photos and posters and took up a quarter of the trailer, and in the end probably only had 10-15 minutes screen time, though he death was pretty shocking. I can't think of much else to discuss, other than this was a great film, had some good one liners, obviously not as great as the original 007 lines... But a fun film, Daniel Craig is supberb, I would give this 5 stars (out of 5). People say this is the best James Bond ever, I disagree, I still say Casino Royale is the greatest.. I will soon be coming out with a review for each and every James Bond movie in detail as this was pretty fun... Probably total bullocks for anyone who doesn't understand 007 :P
